About Petra
Picturesque town in the centre of the island
Petra is a beautiful town in the central area of Mallorca, known as "Es Pla de Mallorca". It has approximately 3000 residents and is a wonderful destination for a holiday in the countryside. The well kept streets of this traditional town are a pleasure to explore and the surrounding natural landscape is ideal for hiking and cycling. Petra also benefits from a train connection to Palma and Manacor. The town has prehistoric origins and there are over 40 archeological sites in the area. Ceramics and coins found in nearby caves date back to the Roman era. During the 16th and 17th centuries, thanks to its fertile lands, Petra was an important centre for cereal production. Petra is place to stock up on local produce. There is a weekly market on Wednesday mornings where you can find lots of local fruit, vegetables, cheeses, nuts etc..
